trying to reformat macbook pro

ok ive tried everything. use reformat time im stuck.
dont know start now.
put in leopard cd , goes apple logo , freezes.
tried format on wifi , asks mavericks. dont have mavericks. have snowleopard latest version bought. erased harddrive steps on youtube says to. dont know do.
thinking of going apple store prob gonna cost arm , leg. thoughts
 

what year mac from?
mac os x 10.5 leopard work on macs released until 2009.
mac os x 10.6 snow leopard work on macs until 2011.
mac os x 10.7 lion work on macs until 2012.
os x 10.8 mountain lion work on macs until 2013.
os x 10.9 mavericks work on current , compatible macs.

have access mac? or if have apple store nearby, may let download os x 10.9 mavericks , make bootable usb installer out of it, free.
