Macbook Unuseably slow, spinning wheel, apps won't open

hi,

first post kind!

i'm looking problem i'm having 2007 macbook (a relic know!) i've had problems not opening apps, or opening them , instantly crashing. decided restore factory settings try , fix problem old , full, wiped , re-installed snow leopard 10.6 had on disk bought update last year. install failed twice on 3rd attempt installed fine, when went through set screens (choose language, set admin account etc.) kept crashing, on first screen, further in process.

times got through create admin account section wouldn't go past screen. each time set account, wouldn't let me use account names had tried made me think creating account reason wouldn't let me past screen. occurred me start in safe mode. let me set straight away no problems, , working fine in safe mode, , there 7 or 8 admin accounts on there previous attempts @ setup. when booted normally, found unable anything, no apps open, icons didn't bounce, nothing.

restarted in safe mode , verified , repaired permissions, log didn't show problem areas or anything, , when restarted thought might have worked able open , use safari. excitement short-lived realised able use minute before seized , got spinning wheel of death , unable anything, shut machine down. have restarted several times , it's same regardless of app open, usable briefly jams up.

ideas?? advice appreciated, not tech savvy person gratefully received.

in advance!

what describing sounds hard drive dying. less common, bad drive cable.
