Does USB portable drives save wear-and-tear on SSD's?

in line of work, need download 30~50gb of files daily, , i'm thinking getting usb portable drive both storage place , saving wear-and-tear on ssd.

got me thinking, usb portable drive saves ssd working much? or file still goes through ssd somehow , consumes life during process?
 

you can direct safari, chrome, torrent applications etc. download ext. hdd note if run said applications without drive attached, may default ssd because downloading considered crucial feature of programs.
