mac Mini and Apple TV

i have old mac mini (model a1176). according bottom, 1.83 ghz. wife , have talked getting apple tv go along our new 50 inch hd tv.

however, wondering, since no longer need mac mini, possible hook mac mini tv , watch movies rented/purchased itunes on tv?

if did that, have idea if picture quality same if used apple tv?

i'm assuming mac mini hooked different tv apple tv connected to?

know, can watch rented contents itunes store on device used rent it. purchased contents can watch on device have , quality should same across devices depending on quality option choose on purchase(sd/hd)

have same setup(2007 mac mini & still running fine till now), used mac mini plex media server store movies & tv shows , watch them via apple tv.

use if i'm outside , decided wanted watch something, i'll remote mac mini , start download first , time home, it's on plex , can view on apple tv right away.
