Non-Retina MBP i5 vs i7

i have 13" mbp 2011 2.3ghz intel core i5.
use mbp school , work, audio/video editing hobby not professional, , never use gaming.

buying non-retina 13" mbp instead of new retina mbp save money , still use/burn cds/dvds quite often. giving 2011 mbp sister needs laptop school (the access has computer @ school or public library). thought buying new macbook air first computer of own , teenager has not had luck keeping electronics "safe".

plan upgrade new non-retina mbp 16gb ram , 1tb ssd on day one. computer last 3-4yrs+. question choosing i5 vs i7 processor. main concern heat , fan noise vs longevity. when bought 2011 mbp told go i5 less heat , less fan noise. told in apple chat on non-retina mbp both i5 , i7 run same when comparing heat, fan noise, , how fan run. true? because told me non-retina mbp not support 16gb ram , not function 1tb ssd seems false have read.

thank help.

that's official apple line, avoid confusing people. mean under normal light usage there won't difference, in reality faster cpu can potentially produce more heat , use more power if both run @ medium high load.

actual difference in heat/power consumption more or less proportional difference in performance, depends on load (they'll closer when light work, , gap widen use cpu more heavily). anandtech article haswell cpus, still gives general idea of how things work out when increase cpu speed:

i7 you're technically getting better binned cpu have lower power consumption if clocked equally, because hits higher frequencies still ends consuming more power. in windows can take faster cpu, underclock it, , lower voltage offset, results in cpu same performance lower end model consumes less power. unfortunately don't think possible in osx (no mac version of intel xtu software).

far memory you'll have no trouble putting 16gb ram , 1tb ssd in machine. imagine told weren't supported because aren't actual options apple offers.
