Thunderbolt question

i have late 2012 imac , mid 2011 11"air. got myself thunderbolt thunderbolt can use air second display port.

read after plugging in both ends each computer, have press command + f2. no results. have tried on both , have received no signal.

there doing wrong?

not using apple keyboard/mouse, if matters in way.
