Time Machine Backup on a smaller hard disk?

i spilled water on macbook air (512 gb hard disk) yesterday, , going while before can repair. have opportunity borrow macbook in meantime, 256 gb.

possible load of content on time machine backup borrowed macbook, 256 gb, , later (when 512 gb macbook arrives) load backed items 256 gb macbook , stuff left out on time machine?

not quite sure happen if so, , afraid loose data leave out on time machine when 256 gb. not want loose data (especially because iphoto photos , videos cannot fit smaller computer).

hope can me.

first. data in loaner, make fake/temp account , login start migration assistant. when screen asks want move over, check user account below uncheck big folder music , pictures down size need. go ahead , import. bring in account , data except categories unchecked.

logout of temp account , account , make sure well. if things good, go ahead , delete temp account.

set aside tm backup , not touch until own machine back. concerned if try use backup disk on new machine prune off old data backup set , lose it.

disk use backup of loaner, once machine can use migration assistant off old disk, manually move on whatever missing new backup disk. make sense?
