17" MBP grey/white screen after login?

i have 2010 mbp, optical drive, running mavericks. after login, apple logo , spinning wheel, white or gray screen,it wont boot up. have tried , no luck. have appointment @ apple store sunday morning. idea else try? thinking hard drive might finished. if is, more capacity. changing ssd way go? people tell me should rid of optical drive , put second drive in there, have buy external cd/dvd drive. best options if need new hard drive? help. john
 

looks nvidiagate hit mbp.

2010 ones had flaw gt 330m.
