Help to stop iTunes downloading automatically

i have bought first ipad (mini) , have used itunes syncing music , books.
have bought apps.
today when turned itunes on in macbook accesses itunes store normal screen comes , downloading apps have bought ipad onto mac (presumably).
on limited broadband allowance 3g network stop happening..
can't see make stop happening on itunes download screen pops can pause downloads , start again open itunes next time.
ipad wi-fi not cellular too.

edited say...i have disable automatic downloading in store tab of preference pane still downloading everytime open itunes..
