GSM vs CDMA iPhones

i verizon customer, i'm thinking switching tmobile. i've done testdrive, , has worked me. however, in case things go wrong, not under contract tmobile, i'd option go verizon.

understanding cdma phones superset of gsm phones. i.e. cdma phones work on gsm (presumably since gsm more common worldwide , allows better roaming), gsm phones cannot work on cdma.

correct? can cdma phone gsm phone can not vice-versa?

if so, guess i'm better off buying verizon phone before switching, terminating contract , getting tmobile sim phone.
 

do said , verizon iphone in case want or need switch tmobile.
