fullscreen 1080 video on 27" imac

when try , watch 1080p (or 720 matter) video youtube or in fullscreen on imac video looks soft because stretching fit full res of screen. there way around this? im fine black bars @ top , bottom if need be. 1440 looks great fullscreen less looks watching sd content on hd tv.
