Networked Time Machine - Why So Cumbersome?

so, connected wd external drive airport extreme's usb port. although drive appeared in finder, not assign time machine until searched internet instructions , connected server , entered lan address. although seems working fine, i'm curious why cumbersome.

have expected network preferences see drive connected airport extreme , allow me click through set up.

eta -- actually, noticed although did full time machine yesterday drive hard-wired computer, it's connected network, seems time machine starting scratch again full back-up on network. @ 650 gb seems take days. why doing this? seems poorly contrived.
 

personally, if can connect external drive directly computer, would. backup performance slow i'd not go route.

i'm not sure why, seems tm assuming different drive once connected router.
