Time machine after upgrade?

hello, upgraded snow leopard mavericks. should have done lot sooner, oh well, better late never.

anyway, did time machine backup before upgrading of course, after upgrade, can keep on using time machine backup or have set brand new time machine?

when plug in external hard drive, can access time machine backups, not automatic anymore, i'm wary of selecting disk in case erases old backups or that.

i've tried searching forum, still sorting through old threads. in advance useful answers.
 

it prompt if continue using backup using previously. click yes , backup continue on if nothing happened.
