Dead optical drive? DIY fixable?

i've had macbook 4,1 since fall '08 , last year optical drive started not reading dvds or cds. computer spits out disc after assume trying load 20 seconds.

sound bad optical drive or else?

i'd hate waste money getting repair @ apple store, can manage myself, @ home?

brand optical drive, , where, recommend?

help!
 

i have replaced couple of these friends. bunch of tiny screws, not bad. bought drive ifixit followed instructions install , worked out fine.
