Networking and multiple Macs
i need mac networking. have imac (21.5” mid 2011, 2.5 ghz core i5, 20 gb of memory, 500 gb hd) , love it. have separate users in family, easy parental controls kids, etc. have bunch of data used have on whs 2011 , moved wd mycloud 3t nas hard drive. returning mycloud, because horrible (slow speed, drive going ‘sleep’ causing disconnections, etc.) have moved data on mycloud 3t hard drive attach imac time being.
issue expanding network second machine; second mac (either mini or imac.) kids , share. have our storage centralized, , able have set each user can sign onto either machine (and future additions) , have same setup there. i’d both storage, , kids, being able change or make additions restrictions or applications once , have available on both machines.
need third machine, such mini work server? can store of user information on server when user signs in on either machine, info there? use third machine media server tv, instead of apple tv? stay mac, since largely mac/ios family. wife , have iphones, kids each have ipod, have ipad , have 2 apple tvs intention of getting third when upgrade our bedroom’s tv in near future.
if buy ‘server’, can put of storage there, eliminating need nas? idea of server vs. nas, largely because mycloud has turned me off them, despite great reviews have seen products synology drives. using crashplan backup, , don’t think can use nas. thought server have computers use time machine server , have of crashplan, giving me double coverage on backup.

you have lot of options available. dedicated server works better since don't have worry else rebooting machine or screwing around it. mini can run mavericks server. check on craigslist or other places used one.
once have server, lots of storage can attached , used variety of uses including time machine, media storage, , user files. have 2011 mini 2x500gb internally , 4tb , 2tb drive attached via firewire. bit more involved discussion ability store user home folder on server , have them available mac in house. server can run itunes , serve media appletvs in house.
use crashplan (family plan) , have backing folders on server. not backup time machine folders crashplan. check isp data caps crashplan backups can use lot of data if you're backing media files. have on 1tb in movies , music. had set crashplan on period of months cox limits me 300gb of data per month.
when installing home network recommend hardwiring can that's in fixed location. devices in our house use wifi ipads , iphones. single story house unfinished basement means can run cat-6 anywhere want.
