Bad Karma or What.......?

suddenly brand new 4 months of usage, imac late 2013 27 inch i5, stopped reading external backup drive , told me not read it, proceded reformat it, , mayor catastrophe, when around 20% of backup completed, imac turned off , never came on again. genius told me worst thing can happen mac turn off because operating system files don't close , infamous white screen of death.
lost data on desktop , of backup because of reformat.
there way info back? imacs unreliable?

brand new mac loses data? bad karma or what.........
 

sorry, bad luck :(

that's why have 4 time machine backups ;) , keep important data on 3 different cloud servers.
