MacBook froze during update, did hard reset, won't boot properly

i have macbook 2.1 (white) 2006/2007. purchased snow leopard. installed software , went smoothly , computer operating normally. right after, did software update. during software update, status bar stuck near end on hour. status "moving files". ended restarting computer pressing restart button. now, when boot, it's grey apple screen.

-i've tried press shift key go safe mode. status bar appears @ bottom , looks loading. once status bar completes, disappears , nothing happens.

-i've tried press command r - nothing.

ideas anyone?

command-r won't on mode/os version. kind of sounds hard drive died.

can boot sl dvd (hold c when booting) , @ internal disk in disk utility there.
