Questions on extending network with AE

i'm using time capsule router, , when using airplay patio, signal gets interrupted. there 1 room (kitchen) between room time capsule , patio. so, added airport express wirelessly extend network , placed on top of kitchen cabinet against exterior wall adjacent patio. thought give me stronger wifi signal on patio, i'm not convinced has helped.

1.) since tc , ae room apart, close?
2.) since they're both same ssid, there way know if/when iphone connected ae vs tc? (perhaps app?)
3.) there app more accurately measure wifi signal strength?
4.) other advice?

 

if can connect both tc , ae via ethernet, rock solid! best option.

using wifi connect them makes them susceptible wifi fog of neighbors.
being close routers not @ problem.

on average night can see around 10-15 routers on wifi tool using.
sharing 3 channels on 2.4ghz band , few more on 5ghz band.

1 thing into: have seen roaming dropouts on airplay when using multiple apple routers , device using 5ghz band.
