Migration from iMac to Mac Mini...nope

here's i'm doing: trying migrate apps 2008 imac new mac mini7 via cat 5 ethernet cable using migration assistant.

here's what's happening: nothing.

here's has happened: on first try, sure wouldn't work using had on hand -i tried migrate using usb. looked working, albeit slow, because solid colored progress bar showed though said had 123 hours left go. now, using ethernet cable, blue/white 'candy cane' striped progress bar no time estimate. been running 17 hours , still nothing candy stripes , no time remaining estimate. mac mini says 'transferring info' , imac says 'your other mac ready'. on 1 of tries, after several hours, thought maybe 'your other mac ready' mean data had transferred. when stopped migration, mac mini gave me couple of messages saying few apps weren't compatible new mm nothing @ had transferred.

appreciated , keep in mind, i'm not technically savvy @ (layman's terms or childlike analogies appreciated). i'm graphics apps rufus when comes inner workings. in advance help.
