Clicked "update" and now have big problems...

my mid 2008 imac has run fine 6 years. last year purchased more ram (?)-- not computer geek-- , upgraded operating system, os x mavericks (i think had upgrade snow leopard first, move on lates). anyhow, clicked on "update" button , gray screen apple logo , "circle".

i've been able disk utility ... unable verify or repair of things listed.

first line picture of hard drive with: 320.07 bg wdc wd320....
next line indented picture of hard drive with: 6552630 + 652356230
cd looking icon word "superdrive" below that.

further down:
picture of disk , "disk 1"
indented pictured of hard drive osx base system

bottom "osx base system" can verified , no repairs needed.

upper 2 items (320.07 gb.... , 6552630....) cannot verified or repaired. says "volume repair complete, updating boot support partitions volume requested" in red.

tried reinstall os x mavericks, disks listed (i'm not sure 1 use, tried both listed) disks locked.

tried use terminal @ volumes based on google search, far terminal prompts come invalid.

not have time machine, or up-- if there way "repair" or "reinstall" great.

@ point, in on head , done trying figure out using other peoples questions not mine . . . :p

ideas?

you try using apple's disk recovery function, installed when updated mavericks.

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718?viewlocale=en_us&locale=en_us

relevant paragraph... after utilities, can run disk utility there. should enough:

try running disk repair here. if doesn't fix it, can continue next steps, re-installing osx.

normally, i'd don't without backup, if don't have one, don't have one.

there's tool can try called "disk warrior", costs $100.

https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11707/diskwarrior

since have disk warrior, first thing i'd try, might try apple's disk recovery first , maybe save money.

might other suggestions here better mine, if computer back, first thing have up. luck!
