AC Extreme extending 5th gen extreme wireless - how to improve it?

so have of laptops upstairs, along using wireless connection. downstairs has apple tv.

cable connection comes house downstairs, near bookshelf. have cable modem plugged 5th gen airport extreme.

extended wireless signal using ac airport extreme upstairs.

part works fine, there times connection lags tiny bit, dropped packets between routers. example during voip call, other person start talking , catch tail end of sentence. , long conversation continues, fine

jabber / im conversations too. of time, sentences posted right away, there lag. open traceroute , there timeouts between routers when happens.

buying ac airport extreme , connect downstairs this? or need start drilling holes , wiring this?
 

have tried using ac router original , 5g extend? ac has more powerful antenna, might better signal upstairs rebroadcast.
