Moving items within external disk drive copies instead of moves

i've got wd book connected macbook (2008 white, 10.6.8). in years past (since 2007) i've been dumping photos on drive, free space on laptop keep backup drive personal photos, important us. i'm getting around organizing photos make sure have printed want in albums, delete duplicates, , put want keep onto dvds or durable hard drive store indefinitely.

wd book has 3 partitions, , photos in same partition. move items around within partition, i've noticed mac copies items rather moving them 1 folder another. pain, because there 240gb worth of movies , photos on hard drive, , copying takes lot longer moving them. idea why finder behaves way when navigating around external hard drive, , if there's way fix it?
 

have checked finder > select external hdd >> info >>> format and sharing & permissions yet?

behaviour happens when 1 of folders, 1 move or move to, has different permissions other.
can check via above info window , source , target folder being selected 1 @ time.
