Blu ray player only playing Disney...?

so boyfriend bought me refurb philips blu ray player groupon birthday gift (probably mistake right there). set , tried watch star trek: original series, took forever read disc , said "unknown disc" , wouldn't attempt play it. tried several discs box set , got same message. tried national treasure, , worked fine. frozen works. however, wouldn't play monty python , holy grail, les misérables, or hobbit: desolation of smaug. wouldn't play enchanted on dvd though believe it's supposed play dvds. 1 says "no disc".

haven't been able update firmware yet since it's ethernet-only, , usb device had on hand formatted mac. once flash drive can update , maybe start working properly. also, doesn't have parental controls set.

before bf starts complaining customer service, thought i'd ask if here has insight? don't think it's region issue since player region 1, , blu rays should too. lot of them aren't labeled, purchased either amazon or best buy. why won't read dvd have no clue.

try update worried new device won't play titles. more of worry wont play dvd's.
in experience firmware update has resolved playback issues me have pretty 1st generation bluray player, find bluray takes forever load can't see problem there. im sorry can't offer more in way of advice.
