waking from sleep: lid and space bar

i have late 2010 11-inch mba running 10.9.3. used wake sleep after opening lid. starting recently, when open lid screen remains black. wake screen have press space bar. happens (almost) if computer has not been used several hours. if asleep not long, opening lid enough.

have changed recently? normal behaviour or went wrong computer's hardware or software?
 

on 2012 mba 10.9.4, open lid, wait second , desktop pops up. don't have touch spacebar.
