External Harddrive Not Recognized (MB Air)

hello all,

appreciate input on because have pursued quite few avenues no avail:
have 2011 macbook air , seagate goflex 500gb external harddrive. harddrive not recognized computer anymore (it not show in disk utility). however, harddrive powers up, light on, spins -- apparently -- -- not make presence known on air.
have tried connecting pc (i have not had suitable mac) , not recognized either. suspect fault harddrive not sure.

if it's not recongnised on either perhaps indicator wrong drive itself. have tried using different usb cable?
