hello, ill right it!
[apologies if has been posted elsewhere i've seen on web, hasn't ]
question this: under circumstances impossible bring external hard drive out of read-only state? and: why hard drive change itsself read /write read only?
brief context:
have 4tb g-drive hard drive has magically become read-only drive severe problems. attempts @ finding solution have failed (all).
longwinded context/series of events:
1.) whilst playing samples on external hd virtual instrument in logic x, computer froze , started repeat 1/4th of second loop of material being played back. complete freeze; nothing responding, looping clip of playback.
2.) restarted machine using opt+cmmd+power button.
3.) external hd didnt mount yet seen in disk utility.
4.) ran verify disk , repair disk both unsuccessfully, , both stopped the disk not repaired. can read files cannot write. backup , reformat possible.
5.) after first failed attempt @ verifying disk, hd mounted didnt mount; option mount in disk utility remained (although trying mount prompted error message) hd seen on desktop of computer (did not appear in sidebar), , content accessed, copied other volumes, not written to.
5.) after backing important work, got info on drive, , noticed usual permission alteration box grayed out, , words you can read inscribed above. changing permissions traditional way seemed no option.
6.) used disk warrior try , rebuild directory, permissions, whatever dw best. no luck: upon trying implement newly build directory, entire computer kernel panicked. black screen, grey screen of you need restart computer. press key continue in several languages came up.
- launched dw again, , time came error regarding drive , no option @ attempt repair because of hardware error. (my heart starts sink... have been hard crash? if so, why still access drive , why fake mount?)
7.) restarted computer. changed cables. changed ports on drive. used usb rather firewire. booted computer safe mode, continued restart things, tried running disk utility again. peripherals detached. other applications closed. no luck. more disc warrior. no luck.
8.) tried drive genius. had no luck , crashed before getting repairing drive. (was more useless dw...)
9.) diagnostics of drive returned normal results; listed how many files, format of drive (hfs+, mac os extended journal) sorts of details indicated drive might have chance of living.
10.) prowled around online. decided since nothing change state of drive , since important pieces of work had been copied elsewhere, launched terminal. sudo , other commands proved useless stating drive in read mode , can not changed. (excuse me...?)
11.) tried more random terminal commands found online, not making dent drive. nothing changed. at. all. same effect disk utility, disk warrior, everything. @ point id have been pleased if sudo or fsck or chfg did damage, nothing tried had effect.
so, im at. couple other notes:
drive indicator light blinks when connected computer
when problem occurred, there might have been kind of power fluctuation (i in southeast asia after all) cant confirm because else connected power didnt flinch: lights in room, tv, led on computer charger, etc. remained nominal.
dont suspect have been problem of streaming audio disk , time machine firing @ same time, because thats happened quite lot me while running logic , every time its stopped playback, or slowed playback.
thing have not done reformat drive because dont have enough space backup important files.
currently, im considering option wanted hear experts thought of situation:
reformat drive , use data recovery restore things virtual instrument sample libraries use work, , iphoto library (which cannot duplicated).
sounds crazy me, , im sure wont work perfectly. lose lot of data.
think? have missed here? whats going on this? under circumstances impossible bring external hard drive out of read-only state?
reading , time. looking forward responses.
info: macbookair, 128gb ssd, os x 10.8.5, 1.8 ghz i5, 4gb ddr3 ram
drive: g-drive 4tb (raid capable, not implemented)
either want data left on there, or dont.
if dont, means continue trying madcap solution's such reformatting , data recovery. though if dont want it, why go trouble, toss it.
if want data, buy drive or 2 , copy whatever can read off bad drive no doubt become read not @ drive, , toss it.
