Setting up NAS on Mac

g'day,

i've purchased wd 4tb "my cloud" nas, new home avi/mp4/etc movies, itunes , iphoto folders.

connected 2011 airport extreme base station, , streaming imac, macbookpro, & htpc (g4 mac mini, or possibly xbox 360).

question is... have use wd software instructed wd, or can set using apple's disk utility?

wont using wd's intended structure (ie share/store photos) need use system @ all??

if want use intended, true nas, want mange/configure built in admin software , connect network via ethernet. couple questions clarify...

how intend connect ae? usb or ethernet? if ethernet i'm pretty sure need administer via internal control software if want act standalone nas on network. if desire operate through usb connection configured using disk utility, bought wrong unit. cheaper direct connect drive have been more suitable.
