i'm longtime macrumors reader , lurker on forums, hello everyone! i'm in bit of bind. made stupid mistake of taking ipad air local computer repair shop here in davis, california glass replaced on 6 weeks ago. had caused damage myself smooshing in laptop bag , didn't want pay $300 replacement glass. business has reviews on yelp of reviews laptop repairs, offer flat rate ipad , iphone repairs well.
after dropping off received phone call couple days later ready pickup. when arrived @ store, there plastic film on glass started take off inspect it. front desk clerk said shouldn't take off until got home, sounded fishy said wanted make sure worked before leaving. when took film off, noticed concentric circular scratches on lcd, had taken steel wool , brushed lcd. crap.
gave them benefit of doubt somehow didn't see seems obvious did, , took , said it. received call next day saying lcd , had been done during repair, , fix it. week later, received call saying ready pickup again. go store pick , turn on , they're "see, everything's fine". notice home button lot looser before , there scratches on bezel prying off glass. mention , repair guy said impossible avoid, wtf? go white page , notice 3 giant dark spots on lcd. again, how have not noticed this? take , it.
have had ipad air 3 weeks while trying new lcd whoever sold them faulty one. realize these not official apple parts , i'm skeptical they're going able find replacement display of sufficient quality. not mention bezel scratched has killed resale value. i've called them many times, each time need few more days , never call me back.
question this, know warranty apple voided it's obvious see. if ask device apple still repair out of warranty if explain them happened (for $300?)? should send letter repair shop requesting replace device , contact consumer affairs if don't, since damage caused them , not me? or totally screwed here? advice appreciated.
unfortunately naively didn't take pictures of initial damage. have receipt original repair says "replace glass" , have phone log of interactions them, giving me timeline of has happened. refunded initial payment @ request (when picked ipad after lcd replacement didn't notice dark spots until after had paid), have record of well.
tl;dr - took ipad air unauthorized repair shop, damaged , still have (it's been on month). should now?
you need inform them either make right or go sammy , amy bouzgalo on them on yelp , let know did air.
bottom line is, need make right. check consumer rights in area. california has tougher consumer laws other areas in country.
