Macbook pro mid 2009 extremely slow

hello,

macbook pro of mid 2009 running poorly. since half year or became difficult open safari or finder window last couple of weeks can close safari force-quitting it.

there 4gb memory installed, have 90gb of 250gb disk space free. running osx 10.9.4 , using secondary 1080p screen.
flies through stuff, i'm typing hangs every couple of sentences or beach balls quite often.
checked activity monitor , shows memory use 3,99gb (of 4gb installed), virtual memory 5,72gb , memory swap used 3,8mb @ moment.
disk speeds around 20mb/s read , 12mb/s write according blackmagic disk speed test.

not want spend lot on machine i'm planning upgrade new imac next release. have tips on how improve performance or impossible without upgrading?

edit: illustrate, when tab in safari hangs, manages show scrambled webpage in text field of tab or other program closed. let's closed itunes 5 minutes ago, website in safari hangs , textfield of sudden show blocky view of itunes mixed up...
 

back , start fresh install of mavericks. :cool:
