Sharing is Caring : Journey from Mac Pro 4.1 to Mac Pro 6.1

i'm sharing journey experience in evaluating if should change current 4.1 mac pro 6.1 mac pro. hope test other people in same situation if considering upgrading.

managed hold of new mac pro used on 2-3 weeks.

background : started off photographer, on last couple of years have been taking on more videography projects. typically videos under 10 minutes titles, text , simple transitions.

happen working on major project requires producing videos of 30 40 minutes in length, lots of multi cam , compound clips. edit in fcpx.

photography corporate , wedding shoots. editing corporate shoot isn't hard final number of images under 100. edit wedding shoots on lightroom, number around 1600 shots.

old mac pro - omp
8 x 3.33ghz processor
28gb of ram
gtx 670
2 x 120gb raid0 ssd vertex 2 boot drive.

new mac pro - nmp
6 x 3.5ghz processor
2 x d500
1 tb apple internal ssd

test reboot, 1 after another. used brucex base if want can test on own system comparison.

nmp : 26 seconds (384% faster)

brucex seems test more gpu accelerated effects, following variations test on cpu crunching.

taking 5k master file export brucex, duplicate 20 times , export 5k master file (if not clip exports fast react to), shall call clip brucex20
omp : 10.3 seconds
nmp : 7.3 seconds (41% faster)

omp : 4 minutes 22 seconds
nmp : 3 minutes 50 seconds (14% faster)

photo processing i'll grab files http://www.rawsamples.ch/index.php/en/canon (so can same if want to), i'll download first 5 files , duplicate them 3 times.

omp : 21 seconds
nmp : 20 seconds (5% faster)

conclusion
======
difference in performance seems 30% faster, clean boot. experience tells me other wise; once start running other program or doing work @ same time, difference feels smaller, around range of 10% 20%. cores on omp seems spreading out workload.

how describe real life experience. working late night, both computers on @ same time, doing work , surfing @ same time. once time convert master file h.264, ran on both computers, can't remember how long took, remember difference between 2 computers less 2-3 minutes. thas conversion of 30 minute master file.

if happen own souped old mac pro, think need go beyond 6 core model make worth money. mean, 6k real world 20% improvement seems bad bang buck. guess chip upgrade old mac pro 3.0ghz 12 core me close performance 10% of cost. upgraded video cards, might approach, 6-8 core performance of new mac pro.

hope comparison come in useful people contemplating upgrading.
