macbook not seeing external hard drive

i want upgrade larger drive purchased new sata 500 gb drive , external case not show either on desktop or in disk utilities. have tried 2 cases 2 cables , bought drive , no luck. runnin 10.5.8 system , time machine external drive shows fine idea im missing here. tried drive on sons macbook pro running 10.8.5 no luck ive tried restarting , booted 10.5 install disk in cd drive still doesnt show. have clowned hard drive carbon copy cloner on time machine drive reluctant put new drive in machine , try that.
 

two sets of drives, enclosures, , cables fail been seen both machine , son's machine ...on usb2 or fw ports?

if usb 2, can plug them friends's computer see if machine sees anything? if fw need try mac has fw ports.
