The files and folders on my desktop are gone!

hello, i'm new forum , i'd ask on particular problem i've experienced today.

okay problem is, files , folders on desktop had disappeared without trace. still fine in morning when first opened mac when went use mac in school, in shock find out files gone.

think might have startup disk. think parts became corrupted? (i'm not familiar terms regarding this, sorry).

time machine isn't option because unfortunately didn't enabled it.
tried download tinkertools in hopes maybe files hidden still didn't fixed it.

changes noticed while searching solution:
1. name of startup disk has changed.
2. there 4gb left on space before , after went 36gb.
3. there still traces of files lost on recent items folders on dock, can't opened.

, lastly, don't know if might have affected it, before happened, turning on mac , accidentally clicked on guest account accident when supposed access own account. startup took awhile, thought nothing (my mac bit old) held power button long enough mac shutdown , start again, , problem occurred.

please me, there important files lost, thesis files. there software can use recover files? or solution, i'll desperately try them all. thanks!

 

have tried logging out , going account?
