hi all,
bought pre-owned mac pro 2008 on weekend.
using istats menus pro, observed cpu fan reading 0 while rest e.g. (exhaust, hd/expansion, power supply) giving normal range of 599, 799, 846 rpm respectively.
yet, bottom fan (of 2 front fans) spinning fast loud noise.
cpu temperature istats reasonable @ 37c 70c.
there observations several tests have done.
a) when detach front fans power, whole unit quiet. confirms noise come either of 2 fronts fans.
b) when disable top front fan (detach power), top fan stops spinning , unit noisy btm fan spinning.
c) when disable btm front fan, btm fan stops top fan still spinning. unit quiet.
(a) (b) (c) prove btm fan culprit. there 2 possibilities:
- physical btm fan faulty
- physical fan functional being instructed spin @ top rpm.
further connect signal cable top fan btm physical fan , left top fan detached. upon boot up, btm fan spinning nicely , quietly.
confirms btm fan working fine means reading sent btm fan erraneous causing spin @ highest rpm. yet, istats shows cpu fan rpm 0.
suspect m/b not giving right temperature fan unit, thereby wrongly instructing fan spin wildly.
advice experts here resolve issue?
in advance.
have solved problem of cpu fan?
hi pdafan,
found problem yours.
bought pre-owned mac pro 2006(1,1) last week. in several days before today, ran normally. today runs loud noise.
using istats pro, observe hd/expansion fan reading 0 while rest 3 fans spinning normally. unload side panel of machine, find top front fan spinning fast , blowing strong wind.
think problem same yours. difference problem top front fan while yours bottom front fan. system can't read speed value of fan, keeps fan in maximum speed protect machine.
so, have solved problem? if yes , have time, please let me know how solve it. e-mail gugule@163.com. hope receive letter. thank much.
