How to recover individual folders of dying external hard drive?

hello,

1 of external hard disks dying. many sectors can't read anymore , i'm trying save can. i'd love use dd this, disk has strange behavior randomly eject itself. therefore dd not best tool here. i've read recommend ddrescue.

drive ejects when long copy operation on-going. ideally i'd love have allows me continue backup/sync operation left off. better if pick folders start because of disk on crashplan.

recommendations , helpful hints welcome.
