How Fast (Reads and Writes) should a USB 3 Flash drive be on a MBA to run external VM

how fast should external usb 3.0 flash drive in order run vm (windows 8). (anyone tried it)
 

i'm not sure exactly, wouldn't better run off external drive instead? have more space install additional vms.
