Working around a broken headphone jack...

dear all

wondering whether me. internal sound on imac (lat 2009) stopped working. after searching around different forums , reading people's answers, concluded reason 'faulty' headphone jack. @ random times sound stops working , flashing red light in jack. not however. there no flashing light. putting toothpick inside jack helps. problem might few minutes , it's not long run solution. it's getting frustrating...

suppose 1 option repaired. but, if i'm not mistaken, mean replacement of whole motherboard. wouldn't cost half of new imac?

wondering whether there option. can switch off jack perhaps? or there way use external speaker without using jack?

thank much!

tom
