Ambient Light Sensor in correlation to Backlight Keyboard

i use remember time few mac os x iterations ago when shut down lights in room, backlight keyboard within mbp light on automatically. doesn't seem case anymore mavericks or yosemite (even previous versions) , bothers me reason.

knowledge there isn't setting can adjust or bring back, , aware brightness of display , keyboard adjusted accordingly light environment find in. (but if backlight on)
there doesn't seem application or official api gives access sensor.

thoughts on this, miss feature? want back?
maybe guys have alternative solutions this. it's not major deal pretty convenient , cool magic trick. :apple:

whenever put lights out it's ambiance , hated when after turning lights out first thing had turn down keyboard backlight. felt playing game of light whack-a-mole.
