viewing PC backup HD docs and pix on OS

so looking getting macbook air. have external backup hdd pc version 99% pictures on (i believe jpeg). able view/edit these on mac using os platform?
last time used mac play oregon trail. yes, 8bit , tiny square screens floppy dive.

it depends on how backup created. if backup created using windows backup tool, may not able read files @ all. if backup drag , drop, you'll able read files depending on disk format may not able edit them unless copy them mac first.
