Why buy an unlocked phone?

i had unlocked 4s, bought full price , using at&t's $60 month prepaid plan.

knew wanted iphone 6, , bought unlocked because had done previously, , wasn't sure best.

so, paid $850 64gb, , paying $60 month phone, text , data.

saw on verizon's website today can phone $199 , pay $60 single plan , unlimited talk, text , 2 gb data (i think at&t's plan might 2.5 gb)

basically, i'm thinking made wrong decision, , wondering:

why people buy unlocked phones?

if travel lot, understand, if don't travel, have credit , bought have cheaper monthly cell phone bill, worth it?
 

freedom of choice?

not many people locked down single network of towers if can avoid it.
