Mail - Winmail.dat brainteaser!

this don't understand:

son has sent me , wife email small picture (.jpg) attachment work ms outlook account. have received attachment winmail.dat file - annoying not uncommon according internet forums. it's happened few times.

here's mystery:

wife , have mail accounts running on same macbook air , macmini - both machines on same version of mavericks. both use icloud mail (@me.com) , both have iphone 5 running same ios version. viewing email in every possible situation (macosx, ios , internet), winmail.dat file , gets viewable .jpg.

logic says there must mac mail setting somewhere in account influencing way incoming email attachment processed , needs changing. it?

ideas?
