Very Slow Connection to External Drives

hopefully have put in correct forum location here goes...

on last couple weeks have been moving 40,000+ photos external wd cloud drive due major issues iphoto having many photos. after completing move of these photos noticed slow connection opening , viewing photos on external drive (just looking through finder, not using iphoto @ all). however, when go old windows computer pictures seem pull faster.

after doing research past few days have been reading major bugs finder using afp & smb network connections. have tried suggestions using program called "path finder" try , speed connection. bit faster not much.

so, trying find out is: issue slow speed related drive format (ntfs, fat32, exfat, etc..)? and, if so, re-formatting external drive hfs+ fix issue/bug finder?
 

how connecting? through wireless connection , router (the wd cloud nas)? if wired ethernet connection using cat 6 , switches?
