Parse vs. AWS

am crazy (or perhaps missing something), or aws waste of time , money?

parse has free tier maxes out @ 1 cpu, 30 reqs/second (79 m requests each month if 100% utilization), 20 gb of database, , 20 gb of file storage.

amazon's free tier gives 1 cpu, no requests, , no data (so basically, it's useless can tell).

parse's standard pricing scales way 10 cpus, 200 reqs/second (526 m requests each month if 100% utilization), , 24 tb of file storage $2420 each month.

doing same thing amazon costs $4205 each month.

what's more, need go through crap ton of effort make amazon's web services work. seems me knew doing take few days set up. didn't know quite doing take few weeks set up.

parse on other hand looks quite straight forward.

had assumed aws best option because i've heard lot of positive things on years , planning on using backend of app i've been working on 6 months. looked @ parse, crunched numbers, looked @ how easy seemed be, , feel can spend week or 2 replicate took months aws (i had planned moving in house servers eventually, wrote code pretty separated front end code can stay same) , save thousands of dollars each month.

it's worth, i'm planning on having hundreds of thousands of users using app initially. end needs hold files upload, , databases.

it depends on specific needs since aws huge platform dozens of different services. might need closer os (via ec2), or need simple file storage s3 (that’s migrated cdn).

implementations of course vary quite bit, secure s3 access in 1 of our apps 1 library inclusion , literally 3 lines of code.

wasn’t surprised parse - many other cloud/storage/paas type solutions - runs on top of aws:

http://aws.amazon.com/solutions/case-studies/parse/

take time , parse, we’ve been using heroku or competitive paas combined s3+cf when roll-our-own, i’m simpler management, more cost effective scaling.
