Bad Software (Rant)

kind of rant.

had pc crash , had use old emac 700mhz several weeks main machine. hadn't been using machine in quite while software out of date , not working well. old versions wouldn't play youtube videos. found strange. despite higher compression of yt videos vs svcd , dvd, played fine. vlc able play high resolution, highly compressed video, yet yt (flash) wouldn't play @ 240p. many of websites viewed slow locked machine up.

decided see available help. found tenfoxfour. amazed @ how better browser was. pc 1.8ghz athlon 64 3000+ while lowly emac 700mhz, yet on many webpages (particularly lot of js), sites faster on tenfoxfour on firefox windows. optimization tactics worked, @ least me, well. machine ram starved @ 512mb.

next, looked yt , found youview. trying play yt videos through flash or html5 through bad looked when watch video of crt, frames weren't skipping, weren't drawing fast enough, @ 240p. once downloaded youview, 480p videos played flawlessly.

assuming software industry more worried performance adding features nobody (or hardly anyone) ever uses, there no reason faster g4 or g5 machine couldn't daily machine (not mention being cut off apple, that's story). has been problem desktops moved 16 bit platform (the old 8 bits not expandable or upgradable software written perform well).

wish more developers spend far more time optimizing bloating. upgrade mac 7.6 8 good. felt got new machine. though haven't had chance use snow leopard, understand 1 of it's major goals trimming down os , optimization. know 'wish' not come true time soon, pisses me off have hardware quite capable of doing want (tenfoxfour , youview being great examples can want), can't use because of sloppy programming.

supposedly new features of both os , software use, pretty use computer same exact way did 7 years ago major change being watching streaming video. when write documents or photo organizing , cleaning or manage e-books or mp3s, same exact way i've been doing years. it's not don't progress, that's not point. if youview can play yt videos in 480p , flash won't work @ all, problem isn't hardware, it's damn flash. html5 isn't better (either on pc or emac). in fact, don't see how move bigger, slower software 'progress'.

ranting. wondering if guys got ticked off @ type of thing.

you're right programmers in past, things 8 bit machines amazing. have think maybe commercial programmers today being influenced hardware manufacturers forced keep buying new hardware. bought 'new' mac cube , loving it.
p.s. amiga 1200 still kicking ass too.
