Feature or bug?

on ipad when in safari in portrait mode , tap bookmark icon menu opens up, select bookmark, , bookmark menu closes. in landscape bookmark menu not close unless tap bookmark icon. doing wrong?
 

did ever find way disable ?. it's hell of waste of real estate.
