Partitioning Question

hello people
wondering if , how. ok still running snow leopard doing can still run fcp6, though forums read may still work.
anyway, thinking upgrading mavericks uni work need use software works so
understand can partition disk , run both os without rebooting.

q. if partition disk, how upgrade 1 part mavericks?

trying find simple instructions online keep getting totally different responses. assistance, highly appreciated :)
 

use disk utility create second partition. make sure it's formatted mac os extended (journaled).

after that, download mavericks installer mac app store , run it. when prompted, select second partition location installed.
