Clamshell vertical dock restricts airflow?

hi dock (bookarc, mtower, etc.) know if restricts airflow mbpr? i'm thinking of buying 1 noticed airflow sounds more suppressed when closed compared when lid open. tested fans set max , hearing differences.

personally, plan on playing games on external monitor mbpr closed. experience this?
 

the air intakes on sides @ bottom, , outlet in hinge. having display open or closed not affect airflow, , docks don't block vents.

when lid open, hinge directs part of airflow upwards, , when closed, airflow directed downwards. why hear difference.
