iPhone is imessage in IOS8 compatible with older phones on IOS5

my wife has iphone 3gs , still on ios5

apple has signifacantly improved imessage in ios8, love know if can still send text , photos between ios5 , ios8 devices.
 

i can't see why not, wouldn't able receive new things voice messages , stuff that.
