Macbook Pro boots to grey screen - but is still functioning in the background

hi all,

weird problem on family's macbook here. computer boots grey screen, , white screen apple logo , startup noise not there. seems still operating in background (i can hear when change volume, , other noises) reason screen dark grey. each time boot startup gets user sign in screen , can see second before goes grey again. weird problem!

ideas? tried restarting, resetting pram, taking out , putting in battery, no avail.

appreciate help! thanks

edit: in command-r recovery mode have similar problem. starts off dark, gets actual grey background, load recovery programs turns dark again.

safe mode not work

edit: should note adjusting brightness adjusts hue of grey screen showing (the light's aren't on somebodies home)
